Why are re-makes necessary?

I was just reading that they're doing a re-make of Karate Kid, starring Will Smith's son...a child who already poses like an unbearable Hollywood star. I don't mind re-makes of bad movies, i.e. the Friday the 13ths...it's not like the new versions have a lot to compete with. But why mess with the good ones? I'd like to hear a smart movie producer/director on the subject of re-makes and why they are as inevitable as bad movies in January......

I once read an interview with Fellini. He said that when he came to the States after the success of La Strada, all anyone wanted to talk to him about was - making a sequel to La Strada! And this was in the 50s! I think it is the feeling among money people that, somehow, movies are like hamburgers - if you find a good recipe, it's better to just keep making it again and again rather than risk making something people won't like. (I'm not even sure this works with hamburgers.)

I guess it all boils down to containing risk. Movies take so much money to make - the really smart money naturally migrates to toothpaste. What I can't understand is when there is an amazingly funny TV show like the British made "The Office", and the money decides that it has to be remade to suite an American audience.
